totally random tuesday.

except that it’s monday.
nothing profound to speak of today. just a couple of random thoughts on my lunch break.
1.) i have one tattoo on my waistline that says ‘fierce grace’, which i would like to think is the definition of my life. (i would also like to think that today would be a day my mom doesn’t read my blog.) if you could have something indelibly marked upon your life, what would you want it to say?
p.s. what does the word ‘indelibly’ mean?
2.) after a couple of conversations with my blog-friend kim about beauty, and given how beautiful and blazing this tree is in front of me as i write, i think tomorrow i will have a few more words to say on the matter. meanwhile, what is beautiful to you? how would you define beauty?
3.) there is about a 48 period of every month when i just shouldn’t write anything. friday fell within that period. while there is still truth to building my wall and becoming an island, it’s probably less dramatic than i described. i’ve come off the island and all is well. count on a guest blogger in about 28 days.
4.) this will be the first year ever in my life that i will not spend thanksgiving with my family. {it’s okay, mom! i’m not sad! y’all go! have fun! i’m fine!} i’m staying behind because my 15-year high school reunion is this weekend; as such, i’ll also be working all weekend at a christmas show. so, instead of eating with my family on thursday i’m having lunch with a precious friend and her family. i was considering even volunteering somewhere; meanwhile, i am so, so thankful i have such wonderful friends. what are your thanksgiving traditions? how are you spending your holiday weekend?
5.) my aunt sent me a link to an online dating site. {really? thanks.} your thoughts?
all for now. catch you on the flip side.

Hi MK,
Yeah, that was totally random. Which is totally okay for Mondays.
1. Indelibly marked on my life? I am the Lord’s and He is mine. Totally.
2. What is beautiful to me? A person with a sense of the worthiness that God has given them.
3. Glad you are back to the mainland.
4. Online dating? Uh, yeah. Definitely not for me. Although some folks seem to have found love that way. Who knows, it could work.
With Love,
Steph

thanks.
1. yes and amen. love it.
2. see above.
3. thanks. glad to be back.
4. i’m not sure it’s for me, either.

My next tattoo says it all: “in His strength.”
I’m missing Thanksgiving with the family for the first time too! I decided to take a longer trip home for Christmas, which will be worth it. Instead, a coworker invited me to join her for Thanksgiving so we’ll be creating our own tradition. At least I still get to have green bean casserole!
Does your aunt hate you? This is how I felt when my aunt suggested that I needed to go out to the bars more in order to meet a guy.
Nov 22, 2010 @ 20:54:54
love that, leigh. are you having it printed or some type of symbol?
and this is why we’re friends. because I LOVE GREEN BEAN CASSEROLE! have so much fun creating new traditions!
ahahahaha – leigh! for some reason, i just don’t picture you as a ‘bar-hopper’. that is hilarious!

It’ll just be the words. On my back I have the Japanese symbol for “long-cherished hope” and I have another tattoo planned that will incorporate the Thai word for faith. I figured I’d get one that doesn’t require interpretation this time:)
Green Bean Casserole is totally my thing! I bring it to all the family gatherings. I think my family is not really upset that I won’t be there but that I won’t be bringing this dish- ha!
Yep, I left the bar-hopping behind after college/grad school- it didn’t get me far and I certainly never met any guy that was marriage material. I just love when people who have been married 20+ years dole out dating advice. Because they clearly understand dating in the modern age so well!
Nov 22, 2010 @ 19:12:32
Uh… NO to the dating sites. Thank You. Love ya!
Nov 22, 2010 @ 20:50:14
haaaaaa…
‘and this is my boss…’
yeh…probably not.

well, i have a friend who has recently had good experiences with e-harmony. it is supposed to be christian-based.
Nov 22, 2010 @ 20:51:25
that’s what i’ve heard! the commercials make it seem like it’s worth it, don’t they?
Nov 22, 2010 @ 19:22:27
What DOES indelibly mean?
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder…really.
As for the tattoo, mine is the Chinese symbol for beauty and it’s on my lower back. I’ve never thought of myself as beautiful so I thought that would be a permanent reminder. Of course it could also be the Chinese symbol for “big butt” for all I know.
And as for the online dating sites, I have to admit that some folks on there were incredibly sketchy but then I met this Marine at Lejeune who turned out to be a really awesome guy…and then I married him!
Love you! Oh and by the way, if you have space in your tummy after TG lunch, I’d love to have you join us for TG dinner!

ellen explained it below. turns out i did use it within its context.
maybe it means ‘beautiful butt’.
you and my aunt. of course, hers was, like, her fifth husband.
there is absolutely nothing more i would rather do on thanksgiving afternoon than lay around at your house and watch a movie (or five) and do nothing. oh, wait…that wasn’t the invitation, was it? well…
love YOOOUUU!

Well it certainly can be! The hubby is working that night.

1. just got a tat a few weeks back. it says lucas and has iowa’s tigerhawk symbol which is fitting because his name is lucas hawk. it is not facebook official because i’m friends with my mom so keep it on the downlow. i totally love it and love looking at it. it is on my L hip and now i’m totally addicted. my next one will say j l dabrika 793 which is a combination of our family’s names that my parents used as our company name when they owned baskin robbins growing up (Joe, Linda, DAvid, BRIan and KAtie — brian being the middle child is the most loved, of course so he got three letters). i don’t know where to put that one. gotta be out of sight for work. so maybe my other hip or the small of my back but i want to be able to see it. suggestions??
but now i own a pickup truck so it turned out perfect.
2. i also find tons of beauty in nature and also feel so close to God when surrounded by it. i wonder if God made man and said he was very good as opposed to the rest of creation being good, why can’t i be so moved and feel so close to God by being surround by man instead of nature? christmas shopping at the mall with tons of crowds bumping into me does nothing to bring me closer to God. all it does is make me swear.
3. there are plenty of days no one should read what i blog, hence i haven’t updated it in over a month.
4. have fun at our high school reunion. my 10 year was great. my first boyfriend is gay (totally perfect choice for him) and my crush was super fat (totally fitting as beer gut kind of guy) and i looked all sorts of hot b/c it was when i was living in chapel hill and being around julie, mollyanne, laura, laci etc totally girled me right up. i think i wore some cashmere wrap around top i barely knew how to tie and boots i know mollyanne made me buy.
5. online dating– never had to go there but then again… i snagged myself a bald divorcee with two teenagers… every girl’s dream

1. note to self: don’t tell katie’s mom about her tat.
his name is super-cute, by the way. also love the name of your family’s corporation. not sure where to tell you to put it. sounds like ours are in similar places for the same reason…the only place i can think of that meets your criteria would be your hip or waistline.
2. ahahahahahahhahahahahaha…ME. TOO.
3. ahahahahaha – hope next month is better for you.
4. i think i have 3 ex-boyfriends who made that choice. pretty awesome. my 5 & 10 year reunions have been fun. doesn’t look like so many people are coming to this one, but i’m still looking forward to it. i have no doubt that you were dressed to impress with those girls on your side!
5. congratulations on the truck.

1. Everything will be okay.
Indelibly means permanent, or not erasable.
2. An older woman who has been broken and poured out for Jesus. One that understands and oozes wisdom and grace from every pore. I have known a couple and would give a lot to be like that when I am older.
3. I have a 24 hour period when I should not be anywhere near a cash register or money. It is my “Paul Revere,” happens every months.
4. We go to both family dinners. His is around 1 and mine is around 6, so we get to eat twice. It’s the only time we see some of our more distant relatives unless there’s a wedding or funeral. We look forward to TG more than Christmas a lot of years.
5. Online dating? Why not? Just be very careful about how you do it. I hear some of them are pretty darn good at screening potential dates.
May I add my own random thought?
If one is falling to pieces, it might be because one is praying to a God they don’t believe in. That song drives me insane. Praying to God that you don’t believe in sounds like a colossal waste of His time, and the singers. IDK, it’s just something I wanted to put out there somewhere…
Nov 22, 2010 @ 20:49:04
1. sweet! thanks, ellen!
2. meee tooo! i can’t wait to be an eccentric old lady who just oozes jesus. someone like big myra. except for the part that she’s not so eccentric. i think i’ll be like kathryn kuhlman, at least that’s what’s been suggested. totally kooky but i love her.
3. yes – money, writing, speaking, breathing – just need to hide out for about 2 days and i’m okay.
4. so fun! have such a great time, ellen!
5. i’d like to think that i’m still cute enough to not have to do it yet but maybe. my friend joy used to try to get me to sign up for eharmony, like, 5 years ago. (i didn’t.)
what song is that!?

1. At a time in my life when I was the most heartbroken I had ever been, I found God in a way that I never had before. The tatoo I chose stands for everything that happened between me and God that year, and my commitment to Him- so that no matter how confused or lost I get in my life, I can’t ever deny Him. Or if I did, it would be really expensive and painful to.
2. I would define beauty as something that takes your breath away. Something dark can also be beautiful, like a dying tree. But it can also be something full of light, like a child’s face that is lit up with hope. Beauty is everywhere to me in nature. I look at a strawberry and think- look what God made. This bright red beautifully rounded juicy sweet fruit with a fluffy green hat- that is beautiful. Now I am starting to sound like a crazy hippie.
3. I could tell that you were not 100% on Saturday. I hope you’re better.
4. My mother has cooked Thanksgiving Dinner every year. And every year she cooks the *exact*same*recipes.* I have loved that. For the first year of my life, my mom is not cooking. The Greganti’s are all going to the Angus Barn for their Thanksgiving Buffet. I’ll tell you if it ruins Thanksgiving or not. Then on Saturday, Jason & I are hosting dinner for his mom’s side of the family. I am not Holly Hostess, so I hope it goes well! Especially with a baby running around this year.. .
5. I know lots….*lots*…of people that have fallen in love with folks from an online dating site, many of whom have married someone they connected with on an online dating site. My advice would be:
a) pick one to start that seems least sketchy, but not overly particular- you want a good selection.
b) don’t talk for long online or on the phone- hurry up and go out with the person. that way you don’t start liking someone a lot and then get hurt if they don’t like you in person.
c) if you’re going to do it, let go of this feeling that it is not ‘cool’ to meet someone online. if you let that affect you, you’re not going to have any fun, nor will you be truly open to the experience.

We usually switch off between my parents and staying in B’ham with my husband’s clan. This year we will be spending Thanksgiving at my parents’… in my hometown, the greatest town in the south, Athens, GA!
Chapel Hill would be a fairly close second, MK.
My Mama cooks all of our favorites for the long weekend. My children have started burning up the phone line with requests.
We will spend most of our time at the lake-house, that though it is only 8 minutes from my parents’ in-town home, seems another world away. I will fish and catch more than my children and husband. We will take long walks through the woods, looking to come across a deer or two ( for once most of my gang will not be armed – it is a no hunt zone.) I will pull flora for some wreaths and bust free this year’s supply of kindling. I’ll let Trent sling the axe since my Mama will be along. She still doesn’t trust me.
Some of us will go to the game – Georgia Tech – a team as sorry as us this year. But, I will stay home and guard the food. I’ve shouldered my share of humility this year.
Hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving.
